Prosecutor Chen Tse-Ming of the Taiwan Chiayi District Prosecutors Office, upon receiving intelligence regarding election bribery, immediately directed a dedicated task force comprising the Chiayi County Station of the Ministry of Justice Investigation Bureau and the Budai Division of the Chiayi County Police Bureau to initiate an investigation. The task force executed search warrants in Yizhu Township, Chiayi County, and other locations, lawfully serving summonses to relevant voters and executing arrest warrants for defendants Lin-Weng ○-Yu and assistant Lin ○-Ying to report for questioning.
Seeking re-election as a citizen representative of Yizhu Township, defendant Lin-Weng ○-Yu allegedly funded and ordered 94 sugar apple gift boxes in July 2026. Lin-Weng then instructed her assistant, defendant Lin ○-Ying, to deliver the gift boxes by scooter to voters with voting rights within the district. Each box, valued at approximately NT$300 to NT$500, was accompanied by a request for voting support. Following re-interrogations, the prosecutor determined that both individuals are heavily suspected of committing the offense of offering bribes under the Civil Servants Election and Strike Act. However, finding detention unnecessary, the prosecutor ordered defendant Lin-Weng ○-Yu released on bail set at NT$80,000 and Lin ○-Ying on bail set at NT$50,000.
The Chiayi District Prosecutors Office specially reminds the public that delivering gifts accompanied by campaign business cards or requests for votes during an election period constitutes a consideration-based bribe as long as the recipient understands it as a request for voting support; one must not assume that a low gift value will confer immunity from liability. Both buying and selling votes are illegal. The public is urged to courageously report election bribery to jointly safeguard the fairness of elections.
