This Office was notified by the police on July 13, 2026 (the 115th year of the Republic of China), that at approximately 0:00 a.m. on the same day, a Vietnamese defendant surnamed Nguyen engaged in a physical altercation over a trivial matter with a Vietnamese victim, also surnamed Nguyen, at a residence in Liujiao Township, Chiayi County. During the altercation, the defendant allegedly stabbed the victim with a knife, inflicting severe injuries. Despite emergency medical treatment, the victim was pronounced dead later that morning.

This Office immediately assigned a prosecutor to direct the Puzi Branch of the Chiayi County Police Bureau to gather and preserve relevant evidence. The prosecutor, accompanied by a forensic pathologist, conducted a post-mortem examination of the victim’s body, and an autopsy will be scheduled to clarify the exact cause of death. Concurrently, the Chiayi Branch of the Association for Victims Support launched its care mechanism to provide necessary assistance.

Following a non-warrant arrest by the police, the defendant, Nguyen, was escorted to this Office on the evening of the same day. Upon interrogation and a comprehensive review of evidence—including witness testimonies and surveillance footage—the prosecutor determined that the defendant is heavily suspected of committing homicide under Article 271, Paragraph 1 of the Criminal Code. Given that the offense is a felony with a minimum mandatory sentence of five or more years of imprisonment, and that grounds and necessity for detention exist, a request for detention was filed with the Taiwan Chiayi District Court. The court has since granted the request and ordered the defendant's detention.

This Office emphasizes that any criminal acts that disregard human life or resort to violence will be strictly prosecuted to safeguard public order. The specialized task force will continue to investigate the details of the case. Meanwhile, the public is urged to resolve disputes through rational and legal channels, and to avoid making irreversible mistakes out of a momentary impulse.
